Vidisha Girl Wins Delhi Network final PATW-2012 at IIT Delhi

Delhi Network of The Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET), UK hosted this years’ final of Present Around the World (PATW) Competition at IIT Delhi on 3rd March. Students from 30 reputed engineering colleges of Delhi, NCR, UP, MP, Punjab, Haryana and Uttarakhand participated in this event. They made their presentations on a range of topics like Green computing, Paper battery, Cloud Computing, E-Bomb, Robotics, Artificial Intelligence etc.

Students tried their best to impress the judges with their presentation and communication skills. Besides the content and depth of knowledge, presentations were evaluated on a range of criteria like; voice clarity, time management, lecture aids, and audience impact. In the end, Ms. Ashima Bansal from Samrat Ashok Technological Institute (SATI), Vidisha (Madhya Pradesh) succeeded in having an edge over all others and won a cash prize of Rs 11,000/-. Ms. Bansal will now represent the Delhi Network at the South Asian Finals being held at Bangalore in July, where she will have to compete with winners from Lahore, Kathmandu, Dhaka, Colombo, etc. besides the five zonal winners of Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore and Kolkata for a ticket to London later this year. The team of Mr. Abhishek Tiwari and Ms. Aishwarya Singh from Krishna Institute of Engineering and Technology (KIET), Ghaziabad was declared runners-up of the event, thus winning a cash prize of Rs 7,500/-. Mr Abhinav Aggarwal from IIT Roorkee and Ms. Neha Singh from Deenbandhu Chhotu Ram University of Science & Technology, Murthal (Haryana) remained at 3rd and 4th places.

Due to large number of activities being organised under TRYST-2012 at IIT Delhi, it proved to be an arduous task to have two auditoriums exclusively for IET’s event. But thanks to the unstinted support from Prof S.S. Murthy from IIT-Delhi, himself a fellow of IET, we succeeded to have a smooth sailing. IIT-Delhi proved to be perfect hosts for the event by providing the infrastructure facilities. The Present Around the World (PATW) Competition encourages students from science background to polish their presentation skills while updating their technical knowledge.

Presentations were judged by two panels of eminent judges including Dr. Sriram Hegde and Dr. Sukumar Mishra, Sr Professors from IIT-Delhi; Mr Pawan Singhal, Director of DCPW (MHA); Sh. Basharat Ahmed Khan, Media Controller-Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts; Ms. Sakal Bhatt, Sr Newscaster at Doordarshan; and Sh. Rakesh Mishra, Project Manager at Indian Oil.

Prizes were given away during the valedictory session by Sh. Dinesh Sharma, the Deputy Mayor of Delhi. While congratulating the winners, Sh. Sharma appreciated the format of competition and called upon the youngsters to make best use of such competitions in becoming better communicators and leaders for shaping tomorrow’s India. Speaking on behalf of the panel of judges, Ms. Sakal Bhatt, herself an ace broadcaster with AIR and Doordarshan, the Public Broadcast Network of India, pointed out the strengths and weaknesses of some of the presentations and provided some crucial tips for shaping their presentations skills in future.

Under the leadership of Ms. Taruna Jain, Assistant Professor at Barkatullah University, Bhopal a dedicated team of volunteers from Barkatullah University, Bhopal; IIT-Delhi and Sharda University, Greater Noida made all out efforts to see that things are in place.

During the finalisation of results a Quiz session was organised by Mr. Anshul Mishra, a student from BUIT Bhopal. IET T-shirts were given away to those hitting the bull’s eye. In fact this session proved to be a great unwinding one for the students after the gruelling presentation sessions of about 5 hours. Those winning the T-shirts were quite happy while others kept asking for more. This year we also requested the participants to fill-up feedback forms and the feedback seems to assure that IET will indeed be receiving help and contribution from these youngsters in coming years.

Sh. H.B.S. Rana, the Chairman of IET Delhi Network thanked IIT-Delhi, the volunteers, and all the participants for the valuable contribution in making the event a grand success. From IET Delhi Network, Prof S.S. Murthy, Vice Chairman, Mr. V.K. Gupta, Hon. Secretary; Mr Ramesh Negi, Chairman-YPS, Mr. Rajeev Gupta, Secretary-YPS, Ms. Taruna Jain, Treasurer-YPS worked as a closed knit team under the leadership of Mr. H.B.S. Rana, the Chairman to make the event a success.

Vote of Thanks was presented by Ms. Taruna Jain. The grand finale included a rock band competition with eight rock bands rocking the stage and everyone gyrating to the tunes in the auditorium.

This event could not have been a success without the backing and support from IET Delhi and our sponsors – AISECT University, Step-up, Career Launcher, Cute Devil, CafĂ© coffee day, Top-n-Town, Swastic Creations, Tupperware and our media partners – Patrika and Red FM 93.5, who in many ways extended their generosity in strengthening the TEKNISKA team to organize the techno-cultural festival. Value of the contribution of our sponsors is even larger considering the fact that it is only by mutual co-operation and contribution by technical society and industrial sector that various such activities can be run and promoted in the society, which are necessary for the betterment of society.

Daily highlights of the tech-fest were carried to the people around Bhopal by the mainstream media with reports in Times of India, Dainik Bhaskar, Dainik Jagran, Patrika, People’s Samachar, and on-air promotions by Red FM 93.5.
